12 San Diego Life Sciences Startups to Watch in 2016

Xconomy San Diego – A whole new crop of life sciences startups are germinating in San Diego, which is good news for the regional cluster of established companies that are focused on innovation in biotechnology, medical devices, healthcare technologies, and medical diagnostics. Renewal is crucial to sustaining and growing an innovation cluster like San Diego’s life sciences community.

But identifying a dozen local startups to watch in the life sciences has been a far more challenging task than selecting the 12 tech startups that made Xconomy’s list of local tech companies to watch in September.

For one thing, life sciences startups typically take far longer to go to market, with regulatory requirements that often take a decade or longer to meet.

Life sciences startups also require far more invested capital just to demonstrate a proof of concept. A group of venture investors that has invested $40 or $50 million in an early stage biotech has essentially validated the company and its technology. It’s my intent here to highlight the other, less visible, life sciences startups.

So the criteria used here were intentionally fuzzy. Most of the companies on this list were founded in the last five years. Most have raised less than $25 million from investors. None of them are public companies.

San Diego’s Amplyx Pharmaceuticals, a frugal drug development company focused on improving existing cancer and anti-viral drugs, would have been a good candidate to make the list. But Amplyx raised $40.5 million from several venture investors in November. (In the preceding nine years, Amplyx had subsisted on $7.7 million in grants and some angel funding.) Crinetics Pharmaceuticals, which scavenged lab equipment for six years, fell off the list in the same way—after raising $40 million.

Some companies made the list based on the strength of their startup leadership. Avelas co-founder Roger Tsien was a 2008 Nobel Prize winner in chemistry for his discoveries in fluorescing peptides. Phil Baran, a co-founder of Sirenas (previously known as Sirenas Marine Discovery) and a professor of chemistry at The Scripps Research Institute, was named a MacArthur fellow in 2013 for his work in synthetic chemistry.

Some companies made the cut based on the strength of their board members, who are often also investors or well-connected to venture investors. Dan Bradbury, the former CEO of San Diego’s Amylin Pharmaceuticals and an active biotech investor, is on the board of both DiaVacs and Renova Therapeutics.

Some made the list based on their innovation. CEO Michael Newman, who is the CEO and lone employee of Decoy Biosystems, said he founded the company to revive some very old research exploring the potential of using killed bacteria to spur the body’s immune system to fight cancer. “Today, cancer immunotherapy is the hottest field in the world,” Newman said. “And what people don’t realize is that it was invented in the 1800s.”

One of the most surprising discoveries that resulted from my quest to identify some of San Diego’s most-promising startups was the sheer number of early stage companies that are germinating here.

In my effort to cast a wide net, I talked with a number of life sciences investors in San Diego. I met with Kara Bortone, a scientific scout and portfolio manager for Johnson & Johnson Innovation and the JLABS incubator in San Diego. I talked with service providers who work with early stage biotechs. Biocom, the San Diego-based industry group, provided a spreadsheet that listed more than 40 local life sciences startups.

By the time I was done, my list had close to 80 companies.

And then the great winnowing began, followed by some immediate second-guessing. As one VC investor put it, “I had no idea there are this many new companies in town. How come you didn’t include [my portfolio company]?”

Private Market Liquidity – What the Hell is Going On?!

A dearth of IPOs from the tech sector this year, and some high-profile disappointments, bring many questions.  Is it best to stay out of the harsh cold of the public markets and snuggle up for winter? Throw another bundle of venture capital money on the fire.  There’s been just 23 tech IPOs, compared with 62 last year.  Yet.. the overall performance has not been as dire as widely believed.  Why would any tech company think that 2016 or 2017 is going to be any better?

With about 150 private tech companies with a valuation of more than $1B, the pipeline is bizarre.  Is it true – something’s got to give? Either more investors, less supply or lower valuations?  Come hear from our panelists – what the heck is going on with private market and long term liquidity strategies!

Bootstrap Your Company to Exit

There are lots of ways to get to exit – M&A being the most common. The average is seven-plus years for a venture-backed company. Some companies need venture to get there, some don’t. Bootstrapping can have its advantages. A $30M exit usually means you didn’t raise venture. And that’s ok. In fact, it can be magnificent.

So how do you bootstrap a company to exit? How do you optimally structure your business? How do you strategize growth? How and when do you take in angel money? How do you build a board?

And ultimately – how do you drive your business to generate multiple bids, and get your sale over the finish line?

We’ve gathered experts to share their wisdom:

SAN DIEGO – August 28, 2014 The San Diego Venture Group announced today that the founder of both Tech Coast Angels and CommNexus, Mike Krenn, has succeeded Dave Titus as its full-time President.

“Mike has been passionately invested in the San Diego tech community, having helped found both the Tech Coast Angels and CommNexus,” said Bob Holmen Chairman of the San Diego Venture Group’s Board of Directors. “He’s the right person to continue expanding our impact in fostering the region’s innovation economy, and we’re excited at bringing him aboard as our President.”

Krenn is also the founder of VenturePipeline.com, a service that matches emerging growth tech companies with venture capital sources. He has helped more 50 companies raise funding, in the hundreds of millions of dollars, with leading firms around the country. Over the years, Krenn has also counseled hundreds of technology companies on various aspects of their business plans, including management issues, market development, strategic partnerships and financing strategies.

“I’m very excited about the opportunity. It’s important to note, and thank my predecessor, Dave Titus, for all that he has done and will continue to do as an active member of San Diego Venture Group,” said Krenn. “I’m looking forward to working with our very active and highly regarded Board of Directors alongside our supporting sponsors and committed members. Collectively, we will prominently showcase what this region has to offer in terms of the next great business investment opportunities. I’m looking forward to working with the entire emerging growth community here and helping drive access to capital, whether it is here, Silicon Valley, or elsewhere. We want to continue to grow San Diego as a leading technology center in this country. ”

Venture Group Recap

Yesterday, along with over 700 fellow San Diego tech folks, I attended the San Diego Venture Group’s 12th Annual Venture Summit in downtown San Diego.

Key takeway:  The startup environment in San Diego is vibrant, for cool apps, for anything touching the life sciences, and even an inkling of companies actually MAKING tangible things.

The keynote speaker, Mark Mills (Manhattan Institute and Digital Power Group), spoke eloquently about the coming age of “ambient computing,” and how the opportunities today can rival and potentially exceed the “industrial revolution.”  I agree that we are at the tip of the iceberg, and as Dave Titus, President of the SDVG stated, San Diego will be leading the way in wireless, life sciences, wearables and sensors, genomics/big data, and mobile apps. As well as craft beers!

Here’s their list of 2014 Cool Companies…

Some of the ones that stick out….Electrozyme, doing leading edge sensors for high performance athletes,Independa, let by the tireless Kian Saneii, which has raised two successful venture rounds for their Aging In Place platform for seniors, TakeLessons, which has branched out from music to a broad range of services and is rapidly ramping revenues.

Following the AM Venture Summit, Eric Otterson of Cooley, Godward LLP, oops, I mean Silicon Valley Bank hosted a “Demo at the Docks,” where ten great companies did speed-date demos, including:

Housecall…to paraphare founder Roland Lightenberg if Uber and Angie’s List had a love child, it would be Housecall, a marketplace for household services.

BqhT2MPCcAI4-SE

Rock my Run…Chief Rocker Adam Riggs-Zeigen presented a very interesting mobile app that changes your music to optimize your workouts. Check out their ‘intelligent music’ app.

StackIQ:  These are a bunch of brilliant engineers out of the San Diego Supercomputer Center and the Scripps Institute of Oceanography with an insanely great software platform for accelerating provisioning and management of Big Data hadoop installations and HPC (High Performance Computing).  Like this one so much I invested in them in their last round!

Finally, not a company, but for anyone interested in the “quantified self”, personal genomics, wearables, sensor, or where medicine is heading, Larry Smarr, the director of the CALIT2 Institute at UC San DIego gave a typically mind-blowing speech.  Larry is arguably THE father of the quantified self movement, and anyone interested in this space need to do their homework on his efforts.

Dave Titus, great event!  And it will be even better next year, and I predict to see a couple of Kickstarter or crowdfunded companies in the COOL list for 2015.
